Studies on the Origin of Yeast Mitochondria
نویسندگان
چکیده
The mitochondria of aerobically grown yeast, in common with those of higher organisms, contain the terminal electron transport, oxidative phosphorylation, and citric acid cycle enzymes of the cell (9). However, unlike higher organisms, the yeast cell is capable of both aerobic and anaerobic growth, and, as was reported some years ago, the b and a cytochromes are not synthesized in the absence of oxygen but are adaptive enzymes formed in response to the presence of oxygen (2, 7). This communicat ion compares some of the cytology and enzymology of the yeast Torulopsis utilis grown both aerobically and anaerobically. I t is shown that, indeed, none of the respiratory chain cytochromes normally associated with the mitochondrial matrix are synthesized by T. utilis grown under strictly anaerobic conditions and that such cells contain no mitochondria but a new previously undescribed membrane system which contains some of the enzymes normally found in mitochondria. It appears that these membranes are concerned with the morphogenesis of mitochondria.

Cisplatin cytotoxicity is dependent on mitochondrial respiration in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Objective(s): To understand the role of mitochondrial respiration in cisplatin sensitivity, we have employed wild-type and mitochondrial DNA depleted Rho0 yeast cells. Materials and Methods: Wild type and Rho0 yeast cultured in fermentable and non-fermentable sugar containing media, were studied for their sensitivity against cisplatin by monitoring growth curves, oxygen consumption, pH changes ...
متن کاملKinetics Studies Impact of Initial pH and Addition of Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on Biogas Production from Tofu Wastewater in Indonesia
The purpose of this work was to study the effect of initial pH and yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae on biogas production from tofu wastewater (TW). The initial pH was varied in ranging of 5 – 9 in substrate without yeast (T5-T9) and with yeast (TY5-TY9). The results showed that optimum initial pH was 8. The maximum biogas was resulted in T8 (275 mL) and TY8 (421 mL). Yeast addition increased tota...
متن کاملThe role of the 3' untranslated region in mRNA sorting to the vicinity of mitochondria is conserved from yeast to human cells.
We recently demonstrated, using yeast DNA microarrays, that mRNAs of polysomes that coisolate with mitochondria code for a subset of mitochondrial proteins. The majority of these mRNAs encode proteins of prokaryotic origin. Herein, we show that a similar association occurs between polysomes and mitochondria in human cells. To determine whether mRNA transport machinery is conserved from yeast to...

متن کاملProfiling phosphoproteins of yeast mitochondria reveals a role of phosphorylation in assembly of the ATP synthase.
Mitochondria are crucial for numerous cellular processes, yet the regulation of mitochondrial functions is only understood in part. Recent studies indicated that the number of mitochondrial phosphoproteins is higher than expected; however, the effect of reversible phosphorylation on mitochondrial structure and function has only been defined in a few cases. It is thus crucial to determine authen...
